May Day rallies across Asia demand improved labor rights

(VOVWORLD) -Workers and activists around the world marked May Day Wednesday with largely peaceful protests demanding improved labor rights.

In the Philippines, hundreds of workers and activists marched to demand wage increases and job security amid soaring food and oil prices. Riot police stopped them from getting close to the presidential palace.

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet on Wednesday celebrated International Labor Day with more than 1,000 employees at the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port in Preah Sihanouk province. He called for harmony between employees and employers to build a peaceful atmosphere in the work place, and said the government will continue to pay attention to the rights and benefits of all workers.

In Seoul, South Korea, thousands of marchers waved flags and shouted slogans in support of workers. The Korean Confederation of Trade Unions, which organized the protest, said it was planning similar rallies at more than 10 locations across South Korea.
